Visit the Vet’s Office

Before taking any other action, set up an appointment at your vet’s office to have your pooch examined by the professionals. This is especially important if your dog’s shedding is severe or if it’s increased drastically in a short period of time. Medical issues—skin infections, parasitic infestations, deficiencies in the diet, and more—could be the root cause! You’ll want to have your pet diagnosed and treated promptly.

Brushing and Bathing

For many dogs, regular brushing and the occasional bath is all that’s needed to keep excess shedding at bay. The occasional bath with a canine-formulated shampoo is another great way to cut down on shedding. Don’t overdo bathing, though, as too many baths can dry out the skin and lead to more shedding instead of less.

Dietary Changes

For dogs eating a low-quality diet with a lot of filler material, an upgrade may be the missing link that leads to a healthy coat and less shedding. Ask your veterinarian to recommend a high-quality diet that has essential nutrients for your dog’s age, size, and breed. Your dog will thank you!

Dietary Supplements

In some cases, dietary supplements given alongside regular meals can help a dog’s coat to stay healthy and cut down on the amount of fur that’s shed. Omega-3 fatty acids, coconut oil, and fish oil are just a few examples. It’s important that you check with your veterinarian first, though, before trying out a dietary supplement on your pet.

Space Restriction Tips

Unfortunately, some dogs just shed more than others. If your companion sheds a lot of fur naturally, try limiting the area in your home where Fido is allowed. This makes things a lot easier to clean!
