Hedgehog Care Tips

There’s an adorable little pet that’s gaining popularity pretty quickly: the hedgehog. These prickly guys are super cute, and they can make really fun pets. Hedgehogs do have some specific care needs, though, so you’ll want to do some research before bringing one home. An Anderson, IN vet offers some great hedgehog care tips below.

Give Hedgie Time To Adjust

Going to a new place can be scary for a hedgehog. Hedgie will need some time to get used to you. This calls for frequent but brief interactions. Pet the little guy and talk to him, but don’t force things. He may roll himself into a ball if he’s scared. Just give him time to unwind. During this stage, it’s important not to accidentally scare your pet. Don’t swoop him up from behind or while he is sleeping, and don’t let your shadow spook him.

Expect Nocturnal Hijinks

Hedgie is a night owl, so he’ll be most active after dark. Put his habitat in a spot where he can sleep during the day but run and play at night without waking you up.

Offer Bright Toys

Hedgehogs can’t see very well, but they do seem to like brightly-colored toys. Offer your cute pet things like balls, stuffed animals, and other fun playthings.

Feed A Good Diet

Proper nutrition is also crucial. Hedgie can have commercial hedgehog or cat food for his main meals. This can be supplemented with safe produce. For treats, you can offer cooked chicken or eggs, waxworms, and the occasional pinky mouse. Ask your vet for specific advice, including portion sizes and unsafe foods.

Watch For Signs Of Illness

Hedgehogs are susceptible to several illnesses and diseases, including cancer, reproductive issues, and dental trouble. Keep an eye out for warning signs. Some common ones are lack of appetite, weight loss, respiratory problems, dull eyes, lethargy, diarrhea, and lumps or bumps. You may also notice some crankiness, such as constant hissing or grumbling. Call your vet immediately if you notice any of these red flags.

Take Lots Of Pictures

This one would apply to any pet, but hedgehogs really are extra adorable. If you’re looking for inspiration, check out some of Instagram’s superstar hedgehogs, such as Azuki, for ideas.
