Summer Kitty Care

Summer is here! Many of our feline friends really enjoy the warm weather. After all, sunbathing is one of Fluffy’s favorite pastimes! Of course, each season brings its own set of concerns for pet owners. Summer is no exception. Read on as an Anderson, IN vet offers some advice on keeping your furry pal happy and healthy this summer.

Give The Furball A View

Our feline buddies certainly do take the need for beauty rest seriously. Fluffy’s probably going to spend the majority of her summer either sleeping, lounging around, or plotting world domination, or all three. Give your kitty a comfy spot in front of a window with a good view, so she can watch birds and butterflies.

Keep Kitty In

Cats are quite adventurous, and they love exploring the Great Outdoors. However, they’re much safer inside! Cars, wild animals, weather, parasites, chemicals, and sadly, some people, can all threaten your cute pet. (Sorry, Fluffy: it’s for your own good.)

Water, Water, Water

Overheating is very dangerous for kitties. Fluffy can’t sweat to cool herself off, except through her paw pads. She could be in serious trouble if she were to overheat! Make sure your furry buddy always has clean water. She may enjoy drinking from a pet fountain: many cats prefer running water.

Cold Snacks

Who says kitties can’t have a cool snack? Pour tuna juice over shaved ice, or freeze some squeezable treats. Fluffy may also enjoy a bowl of chilled sodium-free broth.

Preventative Care

Fleas, ticks, mosquitos, and other parasites are out in full force at this time of year. These tiny monsters carry some very dangerous diseases. Keep up with Fluffy’s preventative care! Ask your vet to recommend an appointment schedule.

Bonus Purrs: Catio or Cat Enclosure

If you really want to pamper your feline overlord, make her a catio or cat enclosure. For a catio, you really just need to put some kitty furniture and pet-safe plants in a bright area with a window view. Check the ASPCA website here for suggestions on non-toxic plants. A cat enclosure actually is outdoors, giving Fluffy a way to enjoy nature safely. You can buy pre-made ones, but you can also look online for DIY plans and instructions.
