Freshen Your Dog’s Breath

Fresh Breath Day is August 6th! This is definitely something that many of our canine pals could work on. Fido’s affectionate smooches will probably never smell like an Alpine forest, but they shouldn’t kill plants, either. Here, an Anderson, IN vet discusses how to freshen your pup’s breath.

Water

First and foremost, make sure Fido always has clean water. It helps rinse away food particles, keeps saliva flowing, and helps fight bad breath. It’s also crucial to his overall health and safety!

Brush Fido’s Teeth

This is hands down the most effective thing you can do to protect your furry friend’s choppers. Training will take some time, of course. Start by gently rubbing his gums. Next, add a finger toothbrush, or even wrap gauze around your finger. Then, slowly incorporate doggy toothpaste.

Chews

Did you know that chewing is good for Fido’s oral health? Make sure your furry friend always has suitable chew toys. You may want to try putting pet toothpaste on a chew stick or a Nylabone.

Breath-Boosting Snacks

You don’t want to give Fido anything made for humans: our products aren’t safe for him. You can make him some doggy breath mints by combining oats, eggs, parsley, and mint with coconut oil. Divide into small bits and bake for 35 minutes at 325F. Don’t give him too many at once! Carrots and apples also make great snacks, as they help scrub plaque off the teeth.

Veterinary Care

Periodontal disease is the main culprit for most instances of bad breath. In fact, over 80 percent of pups over the age of three are afflicted. Have your canine buddy’s choppers checked regularly. It’s also important to realize that bad breath can also be caused by many other issues, such as kidney or liver problems. If Fido is showing any other signs that something may be up, contact your vet.

Parsley

This common kitchen herb is actually quite effective at freshening breath. Add some to Fido’s food, or make some homemade treats that incorporate it. Just be sure to only use curly leaf parsley. Spring parsley is toxic to Fido.

Dental Formula Treats

There are many different doggy dental products available today. These include things like treats, chews, and oral rinses. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.
