Adopting A Shelter Cat

June is Adopt A Shelter Cat Month! Of course, as far as we’re concerned, every month is Adopt A Shelter Cat Month. There’s no bad time to bring Fluffy into your life! A Pendleton, IN vet offers some tips on getting your shelter kitty in this article.

A Forever Promise

It’s absolutely heartbreaking for shelter pets to be adopted, only to end up being rehomed. Make sure that you’re ready to commit to caring for Fluffy for the rest of her life. Adoption is a lifelong promise!

Try Online Searches

Are you looking for a specific type of kitty? Whether you have a favorite breed, color, or age in mind, or want a furball that’s calm around dogs and/or children, you can find the purrfect match in a shelter. Online searches can help you narrow down the field of adorable candidates.

Meeting Fluffy

If possible, schedule an introductory meeting with your new feline pal. Sometimes it only takes one look at a cute furry face to know that you’ve found the right pet! It’s also important to listen to your heart. Maybe the sweet tabby cat in the corner completely melts you, while the Persian you thought you wanted just doesn’t seem like the right fit.

It’s also important to consider your potential pet’s character. A timid kitty may not be a good fit for a busy household with other pets. Most shelters are pretty good about evaluating cats, and helping determine if they are appropriate for homes with other pets and/or children. Don’t be afraid to ask questions! While in some cases, there may not be much information about a kitty, you may actually be able to learn quite a bit about Fluffy.

Purr Activation

Getting adopted is a big deal for Fluffy. It may take her time to get used to you, and just feel safe in her new domain. Providing kitty luxuries, such as furniture, soft beds, toys, and, of course, catnip, can go a long way towards helping your feline friend adjust. Don’t force attention on her: this may just make Fluffy wary of you. You have to win cats’ trust.  Love, patience, and great TLC will help you get that motor running!
